Global Lithotripsy Device Market Share by Industry Research 2016 - 2024

Lithotripsy is the treatment used to cure stones or other calculus in kidney or other organ of body such as gall bladder or liver. Stones occur due to deposition of minerals and other substances in crystalline form. Stones appear in different forms such as tiny small stones, sharp-edged, large size stones. Stones are usually removed from the body through urination. Large size stones are not able to pass through routine urination. Lithotripsy is a procedure where sound waves are used to break large stones into tiny particles which can be easily excreted through urination. The shock waves used in lithotripsy are high energy shock waves.

Lithotripsy is an outpatient treatment. High energy shock waves are generated which are allowed to pass through the body to the site where stone is present. These waves break the large stone into tiny small particles, which are easily removed from the body through normal urination process. It is a non-invasive procedure to get rid of stones with the help of acoustic pulse. It is used to treat stones of kidney, gall bladder, and liver, and have been reported to be used for treatment of salivary stones and pancreatic stones. Lithotripsy is a non-invasive procedure, which is preferred to surgery. A patient does not need to get hospitalized and is discharged on the same day and can attain his routine lifestyle from the next day. Non-invasive nature of the treatment makes it safe and helps in quick recovery as compared to invasive surgery procedures. Non-invasive procedure, safe, and rapid recovery are projected to drive the lithotripsy device market. Several risks are associated with lithotripsy treatment. This treatment is not considered for patients suffering from bleeding disorder and pregnant women. The results are much satisfactory in case of large stones than small stones. Sometimes the procedure results in internal bleeding and may need blood transfusion. It can lead to adverse side effects where kidney may be damaged due to blockage in flow of urine passage caused because of tiny stone particles. Complications such as high blood pressure and above factors restrain the market.

The lithotripsy device market can be segmented based on technology, application, and region. In terms of technology, the market can be segmented into intracorporeal lithotripsy and extracorporeal lithotripsy. Intracorporeal lithotripsy can be sub-segmented, based on instruments used for generation of energy and breaking of stones, into mechanical lithotripsy, electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL), laser lithotripsy, and ultrasonic lithotripsy. EHL and laser lithotripsy require direct visualization, which becomes difficult technically. Intracorporeal lithotripsy is carried out with the help of ureterscopy in cases where extracorporeal lithotripsy is not possible due to its position, size, and density. Extracorporeal lithotripsy also termed as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is carried outside the body where high energy shock waves are allowed to pass through the body. The energy generator is used to attain required intensity of shock wave which cleaves the large stone into tiny sand size particles. ESWL has rapidly replaced the surgery options due to its non-invasive nature, outpatient process, and quick recovery.

Based on application, the lithotripsy device market can be segmented into kidney stone, pancreatic stones, bile duct stone (biliary lithotripsy). Lithotripsy seems to be safe and reliable treatment for bile duct stone and pancreatic stone. Rise in prevalence of kidney stone disorders and awareness about lithotripsy technology among urologists has estimated to cover the largest market in this segment.

In terms of region, the lithotripsy device market can be segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Europe is estimated to be the largest market for lithotripsy devices. Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest growing market due to its new and advance technology development and awareness about these technology among the population and health care sector.

Key players in the lithotripsy device market are Siemens Healthineers, Medtronics, Boston Scientific, DirexGroup, Ince Medical, ELMED Elektronik ve Medikal San. TIC. A.S., Grupo Maxwerk, Haiying Enterprises Group Co. Ltd., and Olympus Corporation.
